Just a week after the new church plant in Wertingen had gotten some positive publicity, three articles showed up in the local paper that concerned the team greatly. The primary one, "Inspiring with Faith and Dinner," was generally good; it described how the German leader of the group (pictured on Ted's left) came to faith in Christ and how he met TEAM worker Ted Holzmann. It also reported of their plans to establish a new Evangelical Free Church (FeG) in Wertingen.
Unfortunately, next to that article was an editorial by the same author which totally undermined all the positives, assigning the group through unmistakable innuendo to the category of “dangerous sect.” His article was even given the title: "The End of Freedom."
Thankfully, it blew over without any recriminating or lasting damage, as far as they can tell. The truly positive benefit was that the core group, which was distressed by the negative publicity, went to the Lord in prayer before talking about possible responses. That was a satisfying sign of spiritual health and a powerful bonding experience for the team.
Note: Ted and Diane Holzmann returned to the USA for health reasons at the end of 2013.
